An electromyographic study on the masticatory muscles in the crossbite patients before and after orthodontic treatment.

چکیده
In recent orthodontic practice, the introduction of multi-banded appliances has contributed heavily to the advancement of orthodontics and, thanks to them, it is possible to rectify the anomaly of jaws to a certain extent. In final analysis, however, the ultimate object of an orthodontic treatment is directed to an improvement of morphologic and esthetic aspects, and sufficient attention is not paid to the functional change of muscles in the oral region. It is also true that, even if the morphology and esthetics have been satisfactorily improved, there is a possibility of relapse unless various gnathofacial components are brought into harmony. In the present study, therefore, the author was concerned with the examinations of muscle function in malocclusal patients; especially with reference to muscle function of the crossbite patients before, during and after orthodontic treatments to elucidate what changes would take place in these stages.

Orthodontic intervention combined with myofunctional therapy increases electromyographic activity of masticatory muscles in patients with skeletal unilateral posterior crossbite.
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate the electromyographic activity of both the temporalis and masseter muscles and the mastication type of patients with skeletal unilateral posterior crossbite before and after orthodontic treatment and speech therapy. METHODS A total of 14 patients with skeletal unilateral posterior crossbite (eight females and six males), between 6-13 years of ag...

BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to compare electromyographic data of two groups of patients (open and deep skeletal bite) before and after surgical orthodontic treatment. METHODS All patients who underwent orthognathic surgery at the Department of Orthodontics (University of Milan) were subjected to periodic electromyographic evaluation of the masticatory muscles (masseter and anterior t...
متن کاملFunctional evaluation of orthopedic and orthodontic treatment in a patient with unilateral posterior crossbite and facial asymmetry
An 8-years old boy with facial asymmetry and unilateral posterior crossbite on the left side received orthopedic and orthodontic treatment. During the first phase of treatment, the narrow maxillary arch was expanded using an acrylic plate. Then, the acrylic plate was used as a bite block with occlusal indentations from the construction bite that was obtained with the incisors in a coincident de...
متن کاملFunctional evaluation in orthodontic surgical treatment: long-term stability and predictability
BACKGROUND The introduction of electromyographic and kinesiographic technology in orthodontics allows to obtain objective data regarding the functional aspects of the mandibular movements and the masticatory muscular activity. It is then important to be able to correlate the data obtained by instrumental activity with the clinical ones. The aim of this study consists to analyse the post ortodon...
